Legal Question in Insurance Law in Nevada

In Nevada I rented a car and gave the keys to my friend who I was traveling with. He was robbed and they took the keys and then the car. Am I liable because "I did not have the keys on me at all times" or "not secure the keys".

If I were representing the rental company I would have to inquire, "Why did you ask your friend to hold your keys?" Also, how did the thief know to what car they belonged and manage to steal the car unless your buddy was in the car when robbed? I would be suspicious that you lent the car to your pal (against the likely terms of the contract that you were the designated operator of the rental) and that he attempted to scheme a way to dispose of the car without either of you being on the hook for the loss to the owner. There just seems to be a bunch more to this story than you are telling, and the company may be right to be very suspicious of this set of facts, as presented by you. If it is completely legit and you immediately filed a police report about the theft and informed the rental company of the loss, you may escape liability. Be prepared, though, for a high level of skepticism and scrutiny of the facts. They will not be hesitant to engage in an extensive investigation over a $25-40k loss.
