Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Hampshire

My daughter and her boyfriend signed a lease on their apartment which ran out in Dec 2010, so they rented month to month. He just walked out on her leaving her to pay the full rent. She has a text message saying he will help her with rent until April, but has made no effort to pay his half. Legally does he have any obligation to her for 1/2 the rent, or can he just leave like he did with out any obligation? I am writing for her because she has no computer, and asked me to find out what I can.

Possibly, first however, you should contact your carrier and get a printout of her text message, or take a picture so that you have that record. You may be able to pursue the boyfriend for his half of the rent, but it will not happen quickly. You will likely have to pay the rent (or move out) and then pursue the boyfriend in Court.
