Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

College Tuition - Deadbeat Dad

My question concerns tuition owed to a University in my name. I was a student at a university from 2004-2005, though I am no longer at this university there is an aprox. 2900 dollar balance on my account.

When I went to this university my father had agreed to pay my tuition since he has had to do little else in my entire life. (I am over 18, but I have not lived with my father for a long time. I live with legal guardians and he was not forced to pay child support.) He payed all the installments up until the last semester. It has gone back and forth from credit collectors and it is ruining my credit. I understand that the agreement was verbal and is hard to hold up in court. I also made a mistake (at least I think it is) to have made some of the payments for him. Now they are about to send it back to the credit collectors and I have decided that I want to write a legaly binding agreement saying that he will pay the balance without deliquencies or he will be in breach of my contract.

Is this legal? I'm not sure because of a third party institution involved... please help me, I'm in desperate need.

Re: College Tuition - Deadbeat Dad

I suggest you speak to a family law attorney to discuss the issue of him owing college expenses to you. You really need a court order instead of some agreement that you draw up.
