Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Cosigning

I cosigned for my girlfriend and her mother to get a car a few years ago and now i am being contacted by a reposession co.The car was given to them before i was even contacted to cosign or show proof of income. If my credit was good enough to make me the primary owner instead of tertiary owner, would this constitute some type of fraud because i did not agree to the monthly payments based on their income and the payments should have been based on mine? What actions can i take to fix this situation?
