gun question?

police claim to have seen a friend throw a gun, but did not retrieve it from on his person and no fingerprints. feds have picked up case. what are chances of beating this and why feds?

It very well may be as a result of the facts surrounding the gun,

Or more likely that there may have been a long term

Investigation by the feds on one of the individuals.
