Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I rented a house in NJ a while ago on 6 months lease. The lease term ended and I am on month-to-month now. I just realized that the NJ law mandates the landlord to provide a notice about the security deposit. Since the landlord didn't provide me such a notice, I sent him a notice stating that I will use the security deposit as next month's rent (June). He didn't pay any interest for me either. Now, he is trying to get rid of me. He sent me a notice on 5/7 asking me to vacate by the end of this month. If not, he threatens to take legal action and not return the security deposit. I have been paying the rent on time so far. What are my rights now?

First of all notice given to you on May 7 is not effective until the end of June since it is my understanding that you are a month to month tenant.Did you upay Mays rent or did you use the security deposit. either way he can't get you out to June 30.
