Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Websites and Money

Hi, my name is--name removed---name removed-- I am about to launch a website\blog about

i was researching many advertising instruments to make money with the website

i am currently 16 years old and i am wondering is it legal for me to sign my website up with the AdBrite network?

The website will be launched through my parent's account on on GoDaddy

anyway, AdBrite wants me to give them my Social Security Number, so i was wondering if it is ok for a 16 year old to receive money from AdBrite and is it legal for me to own my website

Thank You!

Re: Websites and Money

You, at 16, are what we lawyers call an "infant." This is not a bad thing, and you will soon outgrow it (when you hit your 18th birthday). Meanwhile, though, unless certain very unusual circumstances exist, you cannot be bound by a contract. Therefore, while it is perfectly legal for you to have a website and to get paid from your website, it would amaze me if AdBrite were to enter into a contract with you; any contract you do enter into would be voidable at your option, and their lawyers should know that.

Don't go throwing your Social Security Number around to just anyone who asks for it, even after you outgrow legal infancy. There's a LOT of identity theft out there and It Happens to anyone and everyone, but you raise your chances of it happening to you if you give out protected information like a SSN to just anyone who asks for it.
