Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Debt Collection

Eight years ago at the age of seventeen, I gave birth to a

child. I was covered under my parents insurance but

my child was not . Shortly after my eighteenth birthday I

was notified by a collection agency that I owed the

money for my sons hospital stay. Am I responsible for

this money being I was only seventeen at the time? I

am asking because now eight years later the collection

agency has garnished my pay.

Re: Debt Collection

This is an interesting question.

When contacted by the collection agency when you turned 18, what did you say? You had a right to reject the debt at that time.

Has the collection agency received a court order? If so, when was the court order issued? They may have been too late to make the debt stick.

I am available for consultation on this matter.
