Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I found out there was a judgement entered against me but I was never made aware that there was even a court date. How can this be possible and what can I do about it?

The summons may have been dropped in the street, after which the process server filed a perjured affidavit of service. We call this "Sewer Service." Or maybe you agreed to service of summons by mail, you moved and did not notify the judgment creditor.

You need to make a motion to vacate the judgment. There are many different grounds for vacating a default judgment, and it can be a tricky and technical motion to make, but these motions are routinely granted if you can show that you have a defense to the claim.
