Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

past due student loans

I had a student loan that is 30 years old, gov. insured. orignially for 2,000. Recently I got a call from a collection company saying I owe $36,000. Is there anything I can do? It's been so long, I cant remember if I had a balance or not. Don't they have to show me something?
