Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Finding an Attorney

I am trying to find an Attorney, I started researching by using the name of a local Attorney, then researching cases that he worked on, then searching the names of the Attorneys for the other party. I have complied a list, each and everyone of these Attorney's want several hundred dollars to meet me. I want an Attorney that I feel comfortable with. I am not exactly expecting an easy or uncontested divorce and I really want to find someone that I think will best represent me. Should these Attorney's be charging me for an interview? How can I find an Attorney that I am comfortable with, essentially ''weed out'' the others without breaking the bank?

Re: Finding an Attorney

If you don't expect an easy divorce, it will cost you. Most attorneys who handle these matters do require to be paid for anytime they spend on a matter, including the initial interview. There is no low cost way to work on these matters and in this society justice for individuals costs money.

Re: Finding an Attorney

It's very common for an attorney to require a payment for a consultation in matrimonial cases. Many (myself included) offer either a consultation at a substantial discount from normal hourly rates, or with a credit for the value of the consultation against your bill should you hire the attorney.

One of the best way to find an attorney is to ask your friends who they've used. Unfortunately, these days, many people have obtained divorces, so it's likely that someone you know will have a good overview of who's available in your area.

If I can be of further help, please feel free to get in contact.
