Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

rules of engagements

What is the law reguarding engagegment rings? If the engagement ring is a contract for marraige but the engagement is null and void due to breaking up should the ring be returned? Are there exceptions where the ring doesn't have to be legally returned?

Thank you for any input you can provide.

Re: rules of engagements

The ring is given in contemplation of marriage. If the marriage is called off the ring needs to be returned.
