Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

unclaimed money for lawsuit

My stepsister died in 1989 from aids. before then she had three children. she won a lawsuit dealing with some police actions, however, before she was able to collect from this suit she died. we don't know who her original attorney was for this lawsuit. however, we do know that she has left the funds to her children. the children are being raised by someone she did not want them with, however, due to the fact that she didn't leave any will (age 21) this person has custody of them (we are not sure if it's legal or not). Her oldest son is now 18 and is in dire need for this money. could you please help me find out how to track this lawyer down, so that my sister's kids can have a decent living. thank you

You raise more issues in your question than I can answer. However, your central question, how to locate the attorney, is fairly easy. The attorney's name should be on any of the court papers. If you do not have any of the papers, you can get them from the court. You need to find out what court the action was in, and then contact the clerk and they can help you get the information. If you do not know the court, you can contact me directly via email and I will help you sort it out.
