It is very much against the law to copy movies, music, photographs, written works, or any other work of authorship covered under the copyright laws without the permission of the copyright holder. Such copying is called "copyright infringement." Penalties for copyright infringement include civil penalties (money judgments against the infringer) and potential criminal penalties (jail/prison time).
