Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

We work in a school district part time (non exempt worker) and were off for 6 days due to hurricane Sandy. They paid us for the 6 days. Now the district has to make up these 6 days so they are telling us we have to work for free for these 6 days. Is this legal? What can we do?
