Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I live in an apartment complex in the city and recently was a victim of home invasion. The 3 intruders walked into my apartment through the main lobby where a door man was present at 2am then up to my floor. (All caught on the lobby camera) They then used a crow bar/tools to break into my apartment (I have metal door and door frame). I was tied up and pistol whipped a couple times as they robbed my apartment. I filed a police report and they did a full investigation, fingerprinting, etc. I am currently seeking counseling/therapy because of the incident. I having a lot of problems just going about my daily life. I've been told that I might have a building negligence case against my landlord. There have been previous home invasion / robberies in my apartment complex within the past year. I was also told the "buzzer/phone" system in the lobby was suppose to be working but that was broken for years, and that all doors are suppose to come with chain locks, however my door never came with one. Can I bring my landlord to court for negligence?

You may have a legitimate case, especially if the landlord was on notice about prior problems in the building. There are attorneys available who would take this case on a contingent basis.
