Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Lease not signed - what's my responsibility?

I have lived in my building for 4 years - i have signed all leases except for last year. i asked for the lease they said they would give it to me, they never did. i called a number of times & they kept saying they forgot, sorry. anyway, i have now found an apartment to move into and want to leave - the mgr. said that i would be responsible for the last 2 months on my lease. he thinks i signed it but i didnt. Am i still responsible?

Absent a (current) written lease, you are a month-to-month tenant. Outside NYC you would be responsible for giving one month notice to landlord, in the City, you should be able to merely surrender the keys (get a receipt).
