Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Ticket for no front license plate

I was driving about an hour to visit a friend and i stopped at a gas stattion to get a drink. When I came out I noticed that my front plate was barely hnging on by one of the three screws. I asked the gas station attendent for tools and he informed me that he didint have any. i was only about 25 minutes form my destination and i knew my friend had tools so i decided to just fix it when i got there. Shortly after i wa spulled over for no front plate and the state trooper asked for my story. I told him exactly what happened and he still gave me a ticket. When i asked him what i should have done differently in the situation he told me that i shoudl check my plates everytime before i get in my car.

Do I have any defense for this??

Re: Ticket for no front license plate

The officer was right it is the responsibility of the driver to check his/or her car before beginning to drive. That being said the offense being charged has no points on ones driving record either plead guilty and pay the fine or plead guilty with an explanation and hope for a reduction in the fine. In any event this is not worth worrying about the impact is minimal.

Re: Ticket for no front license plate

How did you go from "barely hanging on by one of the three screws" to no plate at all. Did you remove the plate? Plead not guilty and hope for a reduction in court by showing that both plates are now on the car.

Good Luck.
