Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

VTL 1212 Recless Driving

Hello,

I just got a ticket for VTL 1212 Reckless Driving. i have to appear at the criminal court at the scheduled date. However, the officer gave me this ticket because i was involved in an accident while backing up into a parking spot(about two cars back). The officer was not present at the time the accident took place and stated on the report that i was baking up on a one way street. What is the penalty for the violation? Could i face jail time or have a criminal record as a result? Should i get a lawyer?

Thanks for your input.
