Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

My husband died 4 months ago and some of his belongings are at his parents house. I want to retrieve those items but family wont let me, and they said they will start giving his stuff away without my approval. What can I do to get his things

You can go to surrogates court and file a petition to be appointed administrator of his estate. Then you will be in a position to ask the court to order the parents to surrender his personal items to you
