what are the ethical and legal obligations to pay if a roof was installed on my home by mistake?

It is a complicated question that requires more research. Ethically - I can't answer you at all. You should consult with a religious authority - you may have an ethical obligation to pay to some degree.

Legally requires research - basically the contractor may have a claim for unjust enrichment or something along those lines. Certainly if you knew that the roof was being installed and did nothing to stop it, then you would probably have a legal obligation to pay some amount. If you had no idea that a roof was installed until after the fact, then it is less clear. You should consult with an attorney and lay out all the facts.
