Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio

If you receive a notification from a debt collector but never got a notification from the business filing the claim. Am I forced to still pay it?

In Ohio, there is nothing that requires that the person or company you owe the money to first try to contact you before calling in a debt collector. It doesn't make any economic sense for them not to try to collect it themselves first, but who knows what is going through their heads.
