Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

probate info needed

My father passed away on 8/31/2006. Before he passed he requested my childrens SS# my stepmother told me he had set up trust funds for them and that i am named in the will. I have been monitoring the events on line at the ohio lake county probate court site and see the case was closed 8/13/07 i recieved 2 mailings form the attorney since his death. An inventory letter and a notice of probate. Honestly i did not understand either. My father was very wealthy my stepmother is the fudiciary and a law firm was handling the case. Its been almost a year now and i know no more than i did the day he died. How do i find out if i really am named in the will and if the trusts were indeed set up?

Re: probate info needed

Try going to the probate court and asking to see the case file. It's likely that a copy of the "will" will be in the file. Information about the trust may not be available to the public, but it may be mentioned in the will. Lastly, try calling the law firm that handled it.

Re: probate info needed

It appears that the handling of your father's estate is or has been on two tracks, one through probate court, and another through trusts that he established. If this is the case, you can get some information from the court files, but other information from the trustee of your father's estate and the attorney assisting the trustee. If your children are beneficiaries of any trusts he created, they are entitled to know about it.
