Legal Question in Criminal Law in Oregon

Theft of cash deposit

I was recently terminated from my restaurant mgr job because a deposit I took to the bank is missing. Before I was terminated I offered to take a polygraph and even pay the company for money I did not take. I have a new job I enjoy more and make more money. The sheriffs office contacted me via voice mail and wants me to answer questions. Should I return the call and if so how should I answer? I am not interested in helping my former employer due to how I was treated, but I also don't want to be pursued and perhaps lose my new position because of this.

Re: Theft of cash deposit

Sounds like a problem. The police are investigators, meaning they are trying to get evidence, therefore it is not in your interest to give them any information. To get them off your back, you need to call them and assert your right to counsel. Then you need to get counsel who can attend the questioning with you. Of course, you'll need to review all of the details of what you did and didn't do, know and don't know ahead of time. This is all confidential with your lawyer. There may not be much you can do to keep the new position from learning that you are being investigated, but any further information would be slanderous. Contact me directly with further questions.
