Legal Question in Family Law in Pennsylvania

Mental Abuse from Husband

My sister has a husband who mentally abuses

her. She wants out of the marriage, but is afraid

he will become physically abusive if she tries. He

has threatened to kill her dog with his bare hands

and is the type that will destroy personal property

if he doesn't get his way. I was wondering if there

is any legal way that she can get away from him.

She doesn't even want the house that they are

buying. He says that he will take her car away and

she will not have a way to work. Is there anything

she can do and still be safe?

Re: Mental Abuse from Husband

She can apply for a protective order alleging threat or physical vilence within the last 6 months. In our area, the DA will assist her with this and charge the husband. Shce can also seek a temporary restraining order to protect her in the house and keep the car. She can do this at the same time she files for divorce. She will have to find an attorney for the divorce and TRO. Prices for these services vary with attorneys. Depending on where she is she might find legal aid services. Legal aid is not available in my area for these services.
