A fire in a apartment building. fire alarms and smoke detectors did not work.

Who is responsibile for smoke damage

Depends upon where the smoke detectors were, common area or in your apartment? Who was responsible for their upkeep you or the Landlord? Traditionally the LL is responsible for ensuring these devises are operational, but if they just needed new batteries and they were in your room the burdon falls unto you.
