Legal Question in Employment Law in South Carolina

Former Employee Question

I was dismissed from my Job on 9/06/02. The electricity was in my name on befalf of business (to get my daughter into a better school). After I was dismissed I called the electricity company and asked them to transfer name back to Company name, they informed me I needed to also have Company call and verify change. The electricity did not get changed over till December of 2003. When the Company I worked for transfered the electricity they left a balance of $ 450.00. In turn the Electricity company has sent me a bill for it on my personal(home) account. This electricity was not my responsibility. but, since I left on bad terms (I reported them for Insurance Fraud) the Company has stuck me with there bill. Am I liable & is there anything I can do to take care of this issue. The Company has also told me that if I recant everything I told Insurance Company they would pay the bill. I need to know is there a way legally I can handle this?

Re: Former Employee Question

If you were terminated in retaliation for reporting the company for insurance fraud, you may have claims against them under several different theories. Their efforts to stick you with their electric bill could be included. You should speak with an attorney familiar with Employment law in your area. If I can be of further assistance, you are welcome to call me.
