Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

what are my legal rights as a parent in an abusive situation?

I am married. While seperated from my husband, I met another man and lived with him for two months in North Carolina. During that time, this man became physically and emotionally abusive to me. I never reported his abuse to the police until the fourth time.

I finally decided to end the relationship. He agreed. I then found out I was pregnant. He said he wanted me to get

an abortion. After long consideration, I decided to keep the child. He had already cut all ties with me.

I do not want him to have unlimited access to my child because of his drug use and abusive character. What are my

rights if I decide to keep the child and he decides he wants to keep the child part of the time? I want at most, only to give him supervised visitation. What can I legally do?

You didn't say whether you are in SC or NC now. I practice law in SC and only give advise for this state. You need to file an action in the family court for an order of custody and limiting visitation. Providing the judge with certain proof of his drug use and abusive behavior should adequately protect the child. By the way, you should be entitled to child support and maybe other help as well. Good luck.
