Is it in the best interest of the child to have the last name of the mother or the father when mother and father are NOT MARRIED. URGENT REPLY NEEDED being released from hospital today.

It is totally up to the mother.

Some hospitals won't use the father's name unless he signs the Acknowledgment of Paternity.

Some people use both names.

These days everyone does it the way they feel most comfortable.

There is no right or wrong answer.
