what does it mean to get a subpoena, and what happens if you do not answer or go to court

A subpoena is a document ordering you to appear somewhere, or ordering you to produce documents. If you don't a judge may find you in contempt of court, and can issue sanctions. It's not a good idea to ignore them. If you feel the subpoena is unfair, you can hire a lawyer to quash it, but you have to act quickly.
