Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

My brother passed away in 2007 and had named me beneficiary. When I filled out the papers for his retirement, at that time I chose to receive monthly payments for 10 years because I was concerned about the taxes that would be to be paid on it. I am now unemployed and caring for my Mother whos been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I have tried so hard to find work but being 56 seems to hinder my chances. I have now exhausted all my savings and am totally scared to death. I asked the company if I could have the remaining balance in once lump sum in order to survive and was told that once payments had been started, nothing could be changed. Is this true? It just seems to be so unfair. Is there anything that can be done? He worked for TxDot in Hutchins Texas for 12 years. Would love any information that you might could give
