Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

Can a job suspend me for 1 day without pay for not calling in even if i called in to the secretary at the job, which was the normal procedure until the new supervisor came. my sister passed away over the weekend and i called in the tuesday after my vacation (took 6 days instead of 5). he says that i was still required to speak to him personally and at first said he would write me up, but at the end of my shift, told me i was suspended for 1 day.
