Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah

Repayment of signing bonus

I recieved a signing bonus of $18000 when I started with Avaya. The $18000 was taxed and I recieved just on $10000 I left the company on good terms 7 months later. Avaya is saying that I need to repay the entire amount $18000. They took my last two pay checks and a bonus due to me and applied the net amount after taxes to the $18000. I am not opposed to paying back some of the $18000 but I feel I should pay back net not gross and that my paychecks should have been paid to me and then me pay Avaya or at least apply the gross to the gross.

My question is: Do I have to pay back the bonus and if so at what rate and how much?

What are the tax implications?
