Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Im not totally sure what this falls under, but if my old roommate is refusing to pay her part of our moveout charges, what can I do legally so that I don't get taken advantage of and/or sent to collections right along with her?

You pay these charges in your "old roommate's" behalf to avoid being "sent to collections right along with her" and then sue her in small claims court for these amounts + court filing fees.
