Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

we were house guests in a friends house in virginia. she informed us that she had a potential renter in late june 2010 and asked us to vacate by july 14 2010. we were out by july 5th. she then filed a lawsuit asking for 2,200 dollars in damages. we left her house as we had originally found it and in fact the vast majority of the alleged damages were pre-existing and she knows it. We were given no opportunity to inspect the alleged damages, she simply ran up a high bill and sued us. do we have rights in this regard?

Of course, you have rights, starting wih the basic right to defend yourself in

court against the false claims of your accuser. However, you may

need some instruction in the basics of preparing and presenting your defense,

and therefore I would recommend that you arrange for a consultation with a

local attorney who handles litigation and landlord--tenant issues to advise

you on these matters . (I assume that the case has been filed in small

claims court where Virginia attorneys are not allowed to represent clients.)
