Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

The question i have to ask is i am renting an apartment for 510.00 a month. i have a year lease. i would like to move either before or after lease expires. i might want to go on a month to month lease until i move into a house. is it legal for the landlord to charge me extra money on a month to month lease.
