Old landlord threatens to sue.

Last year I signed a lease that stated I pay $600 a month or $350 a month for rent if I had a roommate. Halfway during the year my roommate left. The lease also stated I could pay a full years rent at once to get one month free. I did that option. 2 days prior to moving out the Landlord calls me and says I owe backrent for the 2nd half of the year since my roommate left. The only notice was verbal to me when my roommate left and it not stating I owe that rent just if I could look into getting a new roommate. I left without paying the back rent because I view it as unfair especially since no other rent was collected the 2nd half of the year or no notice was given. Which leads me to believe no true intention to collect anything was in order as long as I renewed and not giving me any notice hampered my chances to get a new roommate if need be. They threaten now to sue and it has been a month and a half since I my lease ended.

I'd say your on the hook for the "whole

enchilada", so to speak, meaning the total amount owed for the entire period that the lease was to run minus whatever you and your roommate paid for rent during this period.
