Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I have recently accepted a job and have to relocate. My question how can I break the lease that I am in? The original lease stated that I could go month to month after we met our original obligation. We were told that it was a mistake and were made to sign an extension for another year. Is this right? Can I break this lease?

Not unless the landlord approves its early termination.
