Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Virginia

Filing case pro se

Is is alright (legal) for a surviving spouse who is also the court appointed administrator of the deceased person's estate to file a wrongful death claim, pro se, in order to avoid the statute of limitations expiring, and then obtain an attorney after the case has been filed, and the 2 year statute has passed (but the case is on file as pro,se)?

Thank-you.
