Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Child Support

I recently had a child support hearing and they know that i don't have a job but i'm looking 4 one they have ordered me to pay $254.00 a month for my 2 children i go to court again on the 25th of this month and that is the day they say i need to have the 254 then i have to have a payment of $454.00 by december i don't understand why they want me to pay so much and i do not have a job they say if i don't pay the $254 their is a chance that they will lock me up. my questions to you is if i make a payment of $25-$50 do you think they can still lock me up because honestly that is all that i can afford being that i don't have a job and i recieve foodstamps. even though it's not the amount that they are asking for it shows that i am making an effort. Also i would like to know if their is a way to go back to court and tell them that i want my child support payments lowered atleast until i find a job.

Re: Child Support

WA has nearly the lowest transfer payment of any state in the nation, including places like Mississippi and Alabama. $254.00 is a very low amount. Generally support transfer payments are more like $300 per child.

They want you to pay to help support your children. It is your obligation, not the state's.

Yes, you can be jailed for failing to comply with a court order. It is called contempt of court.

If this is happening you are entitled to counsel from Department of Assigned Counsel. You can contact them for more assistance.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Unless you plan on representing yourself in court, it is recommended (strongly) that you consult an attorney to discuss this matter.

Thank you.

Respectfully.
