My friend sexually insulted his ex-girlfriend via email and parted ways. A year after parting ways, the ex-girlfriend filed an FIR against him under 509 IPC. What maximum punishment can he expect if he apologizes in court?
Can he be let off with a small fine of Rs 5000 or will he go to jail for 3 years plus fine of Rs 5000? If he is let off with a fine only will his conviction be recorded as a criminal record which he has to declare while applying for passport and visa for going abroad? .

your friend may try to settle the matter with his girl friend and the case can be compounded u/s 320 of Criminal Procedure Code.
