can a 85 year old man convey his farm, first to his son until retirement, and then later to his 14 grandchildren?

Yes he can, and his age doesn't matter as long as he is competent to execute the documents. You would ideally need to consult with an Elder Law attorney to ensure that you do not give up certain benefits (Medicaid being one) and you might also want to consider VA Aid and Attendance if you are a vet.
