Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

illegal search and siezure

In California, is it legal for the police to stop a person,(wether they are walking ,or riding a bicycle), and search that person for absolutely no reason at all? The police dont need a reason to ''detain '' you, and search you? As an american citizen, is it not against my civil rights to walk freely to the store without being humiliated by being stopped and searched by the police, when I had done NOTHING but WALK to the store, breaking NO laws? It seems as if we are becoming more like communist countries where police are God's and can do what ever they want, and no one can refuse to them, or suffer the consequences!! What can I do to keep this from happening to my children, and my grandchildren? This is not a free country if we can not be free to just walk to the store!! Please help, as this has been wieghing greatly on my mind for days!
