Legal Question in Family Law in California

My ex and I agreed to joint legal and physical custody. The children live with my in CA, (since June 2008) and he lives in CO (military). He recently informed me he wants the kids to live with him equal amounts of time, such as 6 months or 1 year alternating. I do not want them to have to switch schools, can he force them to?

Given the distance would force the children to change schools every six months to a year, I cannot imagine a court finding that to be in their best interests, which is what the court must find before issuing a custody schedule order. So unless there is some reason that would persuade a court that such a difficult schedule would be in their best interests, he canno force the change.
