break apartment lease because leaving the country

is it possible to break a lease contract for an apartment because i am leaving the country? i am in california for one semester as an exchange student and life in an apartment with a 10 month lease which i will only need 5 months of. if i dont find another person to take over the lease can i cancel the lease contract because i am leaving the country and will not come back?

Your leaving the country is not a basis for terminating a lease early. Sorry. However, if you are leaving the country and never plan to come back, then what do you care if the landlord gets a judgment against you. I doubt sincerely (unless your rent is astronomical) that the landlord will pursue collections of this judgment in another country - cost prohibitive. You can always ask your landlord to voluntarily terminate the agreement early - offer him some sort of compensation to do so, or find him a replacement tenant so he's not out any money because of your early termination.
