Legal Question in Product Liability in California

Liability of having video surveillance

I am trying to find out the liability issues of having video surveillance. If I have a business with cameras recording and something happens (assault, rape, theft etc.) on my property, what responsibilities/liabilities do I have if I captured the video? What if I didn't capture the video or the video is unclear? Can I be held liable/responsible for bad things happening on my property?

Someone told me businesses were taking their cameras out because of liability issues. They don't want to be sued for capturing or not capturing incidents on video. Does that sound correct? The main place I am hearing this is in California. Are most state laws concerning this the same?

Thank you.

Re: Liability of having video surveillance

Even though your questipn says it is based on CA law, seems to me your question relates tp your place of business in OK. I don't know what the law is in OK, but my best guess is that installing video cameras neither creates, increases, nor decreases your legal duties in any US jurisdiction. Your best source of authoritative information on this subject is your business insurance carrier.
