Executors are entitled to receive two categories of compensation: statutory fees and extraordinary fees. Statutory fees are calcuated as a percentage of the gross value of the estate, starting at 4% for the first $100,000, three percent for the next $100,000 and two percent for the next $800,000. (See probate code section 10800). Executor's are also entitled to reasonable compensation, usually calcuated on an hourly basis, for services beyond standard work of administration including the employment of tax experts.
