Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

Motor Vehicle Tax from 1998

Yesterday I received a First Notice from a collection company stating that I owe almost $1000 for a motor Vehicle Tax in Stamford, CT from 1998. The original tax was $185.71 and the remainder of the bill is $311.83 for Charges and $359.84 for Other Accounts. I owned a car while living in Stamford between August 1997 and June 1998 and was then transferred overseas with my job. I do not recall ever receiving a notification on this and doubt I even have any records from that time. I would like to know my rights and statute of limitations before I contact the company.

The collection company resides in MA.

Thanks.

The statute of limitations for suit on a debt is four years in Texas. Connecticut has a six-year statute for a contract in writing.

Write to them, certified mail, return receipt requested, stating that you deny the debt, that any further contact is to be in writing, that action on the debt is barred by limitations, and if they proceed they may be in violation of the FDCPA.
