Employement offer

By law do you need a letter of offer for a job, or is an oral agreement okay?

You don't need a written offer in Connecticut. Most employers use them because they memorialize the terms of employment. Connecticut is an "at will" state, which means that employment is at the will of the employer, so there are times where the written offer is the only document signifying an agreement, or an offer. Even where an agreement is oral, though, and nothing is written down, the agreement can still be enforceable against the other party. It depends on your circumstances and any evidence showing the parties agreed to be bound.
