Legal Question in Construction Law in Georgia

My mother and I signed a contract with a building company to finish the basement in our house. After the start of the work we were not satisfied with the way the work was going. We informed them that we wanted to get out of the contract and pay them for the work that had been done so far. They responded with dismay and expressed that they would prefer to finish the work but if we were to buy out of the contract it would be outrageously high amount more than half of the work. We have priced the work and have a good idea of how much the work is worth and there is huge difference between the two amounts. We have not paid them any money so far. What options do we have at this time? Can they put any liens on our property? What can I expect from them?

If you breach the contract, they certainly may file a lien and seek collection. It is not just an issue of what you can pay someone else for the work. The first company is entitled to the full benefit of the contract, including the profit they would have made on the whole job. Obviously, no one here knows the terms of the contract, etc.
